Electricity storage in the grid: evolution instead of revolution

Grid-serving large-scale storage systems are needed for the energy transition to continue to keep grids stable as the share of fluctuating renewable energies increases. At strategically favorable grid nodes, they can absorb surplus electricity - and release it again. But how do these large-scale storage systems pay off, and what business models are behind them?
