Digital and IoT solutions are making power grids smart. They create new opportunities to integrate renewable energies into the grids. Smart grids can react intelligently and adaptively to changes in the grid. Energy intelligence enables the use of data in the grid for economical, flexible and secure grid operation. This also gives rise to new business opportunities, for example at the grid edge, the transition from the public power grid to the private grid. Dr. Michael Weinhold, Head of Technology and Innovation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, tells us what these look like and why smart grids are indispensable for the new energy world.

About Dr. Michael Weinhold and Siemens Smart Infrastructure
Michael Weinhold holds the position of Head of Technology and Innovation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure. He and his team deal with leading-edge technologies in the fields of power grids, intelligent buildings and using digitalization to interconnect them. His area of responsibility also includes data analysis and artificial intelligence, as well as power electronics and network security. He also used to be responsible for technology developments in the Energy Management Division, until 2014 in the Energy Sector and from 2004 to 2008 in Power Transmission and Distribution. After leaving university, he joined Siemens AG and began his career as a system planning engineer and commissioning engineer for high-voltage systems. Siemens named him "Inventor of the Year" in 1997 and "Top Innovator" in 2008.
