Integrating Electric Mobility and Renewable Energy: Addressing Grid Challenges in Europe with a Focus on Cybersecurity Against Military Hackers

Baerte de Brey, a Dutch grid operator and vice president of e-mobility Europe, discusses the integration of electric mobility into energy systems in the Netherlands. He underscores the necessity for standardization across European countries to effectively tackle climate change and emissions issues. Innovations like smart charging and bidirectional charging are pivotal in managing peak demands on grids due to rooftop solar panels during sunny days and EV usage at night or morning peaks. Baerte de Brey points out that infrastructure investment is essential for sustainable growth but involves time-consuming processes such as upgrading cables and transformers. Standardized protocols across different countries' grid connections are crucial for seamless EV operations throughout Europe, necessitating collaboration with car manufacturers developing bi-directional vehicles compatible with various market standards. Cybersecurity remains vital amidst these advancements to ensure secure transitions between renewable sources based on fluctuating energy prices. Thorough testing in laboratories like ElaadNL ensures vulnerabilities are identified before exploitation by malicious entities, emphasizing preparedness as key within effective cybersecurity strategies.

Electric vehicles are more than clean transport. They are key to the distributed energy ecosystem. Unlocking their potential requires smart (V1X) and bidirectional (V2X) charging, both essential for seamless grid integration and maximizing the value of electric vehicles as flexible energy assets.Such solutions help EV owners cut costs and generate revenue while enabling grid operators to manage congestion, enhance stability, and support a cleaner energy transition. This session will explore business models for cost-effective V1X and V2X integration, focusing on grid-EV interaction and demand-side management in residential and commercial settings.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
