SMA Unveils Advanced Energy Management Solutions Focused on Efficiency, Comfort, and Sustainability

Bart van Remortel, the solution manager for SMA's home residential energy management solutions, discusses the company's new developments and aims in energy management at The Smarter E event. Their primary goal is to reduce utility bills without compromising comfort or sustainability. They achieve this by optimizing the use of solar energy and ensuring systems are user-friendly and reliable. Key announcements include advanced functionalities in their existing system: improved yield with over-dimensioned PV plants, compliance with Germany's Paragraph 15A legislation affecting grid capacity while maintaining comfort levels, and support for dynamic pricing facilitated by smart meters. Bart van Remortel emphasizes that efficient energy management involves two main aspects: high efficiency and intelligence. This includes handling fluctuating prices effectively through products like Sunny Home Manager, which has been widely adopted. Future trends involve further legislative changes aimed at managing peak demands on the grid more efficiently and utilizing smaller consumer contributions to balance it as virtual batteries for TSOs (Transmission System Operators).

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
