But Not on My Doorstep, Please! – The Energy Transition and its Social Acceptance

The smarter E Podcast Episode 167 | February 22, 2024 | Language: English

Cheap electricity? 100% renewable? Reliable 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? That's what almost everyone wants. But not everyone is prepared to accept the necessary consequences, such as a new high-voltage power line on the outskirts of town or wind turbines in the neighbourhood. Citizen protests and objections from conservation groups to infrastructure expansion often slow down the energy transition, and precious time is lost on the road to climate neutrality. But why do we need new transmission grids? Are there no alternatives? And how can social acceptance of grid expansion be increased?

We talk about this in the latest episode with Antonella Battaglini, the CEO of the Renewables Grid Initiative-RGI.

Timeline:

  • 02:00 About The Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI). What is the focus of it`s activities?
  • 09:22 How can acceptance of new power lines be promoted among citizens and local authorities?
  • 15:39 What role does the cross-border exchange of electricity in Europe play in a successful energy transition? What advantages does it offer?
  • 18:01 Where do we currently stand in terms of expanding and connecting the transmission grids?

The advances of technology along the solar value chain in recent years have been breathtaking: Innovations have included considerably larger wafers, new cell technologies, much higher-efficiency solar modules, smarter inverters with management systems that can control fully electrified high-tech homes and less material-intensive fixed or tracking mounting systems that can be installed faster and boost system yields. This session will provide an overview of the latest technologies:Wafer-to-module technology innovationsGrid-connection and system control devicesMounting technology for solar system installations

An inflationary environment with high product and labor costs as well as rising interest rates have made investments into solar projects less attractive at a time when Europe needs to accelerate deployment in order to meet its climate targets. On top of that, policy makers are creating uncertainty among investors by implementing caps on revenues and rushing to modify an established electricity market design. This session will cover:Overview of the solar project financing landscapeBusiness models and solar investment trendsInsurability and risk assessment in PV projects
