Mesh Grids Transform Electricity Access in African Villages Despite Investment Hurdles

The video explores the integration of solar home systems and DC mini-grids, focusing on a new solution called mesh grids. Unlike traditional AC mini-grids that are expensive due to centralized infrastructure, mesh grids decentralize power generation by equipping every 5th to 10th household with solar systems. This method offers quality electricity at about half the cost using safe-to-touch DC technology. Mesh grids employ LoRa modems for device communication and integrate OpenPAYGO tokens for easy customer payments via SMS or an Android app. Successful implementations in Cameroon and Zambia have benefited approximately 240 people per grid system; however, challenges remain such as equity shortages since PAYGO models without subsidies struggle financially despite institutional finance's emergence hindered by slow processes and mismanagement issues like Nigeria’s NEP project. The German startup faces financial regulatory hurdles requiring tax advisors and audited accounts while criticizing inflexible finance programs not tailored to specific business needs alongside opaque tendering processes often canceled unexpectedly after significant investment efforts—further compounded by market distortions from foreign government-subsidized competitors impacting competitiveness within Europe amidst systemic payment default issues among impoverished communities prioritizing survival over commitments.

Talk of session: Off-Grid: Rural Electrification Based on Solar Systems - Lessons Learned

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
