Pioneering PVT Technology at Intersolar Munich: A Breakthrough in Sustainable Energy Solutions

Intersolar Munich marks the third appearance of a company specializing in PVT technology, which combines photovoltaic (PV) and thermal energy harvesting. Unlike standard PV systems that only generate electricity, PVT panels also capture thermal energy. The company's production site is located in Dresden, Germany, where they operate a 50-megawatt line with most components produced locally. Backed by Mahle—a major German automotive conglomerate—the startup has developed certified products since 2023 and begun mass production. PVT technology offers dual benefits: increased electrical output due to cooling effects from heat removal and versatile applications for heating processes using low-temperature setups combined with heat pumps. Recent projects include decarbonizing buildings like Vienna's multifunctional sports arena through innovative seasonal storage solutions involving geoprobes. The planning process for integrating PVT systems involves experienced planners who assess building needs to optimize both electric and thermal outputs while allowing space for traditional PV installations if needed. Collaborations with Wagner Solar have led to cost-effective piping solutions that make installation time-efficient compared to conventional methods. Overall, the company aims at expanding PVT beyond its niche status into broader industrial applications while maintaining sustainability goals through carbon-neutral initiatives.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
