be.storaged Navigates Dynamic Battery Storage Market with Innovative Solutions for Industrial Customers in Germany

be.storaged is a company that originated from EWE, an electricity provider in northwestern Germany. Founded in 2017 to focus on battery storage solutions, be.storaged has evolved with the dynamic energy market. Initially involved in utility-scale projects using hybrid sodium sulfur and lithium-ion batteries for frequency containment reserve (FCR) markets, they shifted their focus towards commercial and industrial (C&I) customers due to changing market conditions. As a full EPC supplier, be.storaged sources batteries from various manufacturers while developing its own Energy Management System (EMS) for multi-use cases and revenue stacking without relying solely on grid feedback capabilities—a challenge given regulatory complexities around feeding electricity back into the German grid. They emphasize local savings through peak shaving strategies tailored to regional variations in costs imposed by different Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Despite challenges communicating complex value propositions like monetization of self-consumption or flexibility trading to end-users unfamiliar with such concepts, there’s optimism about growing acceptance akin to photovoltaic systems' adoption trends.

Our European energy system is undergoing a major transformation, moving towards decentralization with increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to the grid, such as PV solar, battery storage, and EVs. While DERs provide clear benefits such as limiting costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and helping to empower consumers, there are still challenges to overcome to develop DERs to their full potential. This session will focus on best practices and innovative projects, both from a grid and user perspective (e.g. energy communities) and we will discuss how the regulatory framework can be improved to facilitate the penetration of DERs and active participation from consumers.
