Jedlix's Bas Lottman Discusses Smart Charging Solutions and V2G Implementation to Address Grid Congestion Challenges

Bas Lottman, head of product at Jedlix, discussed the company's initiatives in smart charging for electric vehicles (EVs) and their efforts to implement Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. Jedlix operates in more than 10 countries on a B2B2C model with an ambition to establish zero-emission charging as standard by 2030 across five continents. A pressing challenge is grid congestion, particularly evident in the Netherlands where energy distribution struggles despite abundant sustainable energy supply. This bottleneck threatens energy security, economic growth, innovation, EV adoption rates, and sustainability goals. While grid expansion is necessary but costly ($60 billion projected until 2030 in the Netherlands), immediate relief can come from smart energy management systems integrated with incentives ("carrots") like savings on energy tariffs for residential users. V2G technology allows bidirectional power flow between cars and grids; enabling this flexibility would significantly alleviate congestion issues. Jedlix collaborates with multiple OEMs like Kia to advance V2X solutions through protocols such as OSPP and ISO 15118. These partnerships aim to optimize end-user value while integrating signals from Energy Suppliers (BRPs). Unlocking additional market signals could further encourage user participation in providing flexibility within an integrated ecosystem.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
