Electrification as a solution to boost European competitiveness in the face of geopolitical tensions.

The speaker discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by European businesses due to geopolitical tensions and uncertainty. It highlights that these factors significantly impact balance sheets and investment decisions. The discussion pivots towards electrification as a potential solution for enhancing competitiveness within Europe, emphasizing the need for an effective framework to improve access to electricity rather than focusing on negative outcomes ("doom and gloom"). The narrative suggests that solutions are available now which can bolster Europe's competitive environment. Following this introduction, Stefan Hakansson is invited onto the stage; he is identified as both president of Oresundskraft AB—a Swedish company—and a senior advisor at GFG Alliance. This transition indicates a shift from discussing general issues affecting Europe’s business landscape to potentially exploring specific insights or strategies offered by Hakansson in his dual roles, aiming at addressing current economic challenges through practical measures related to energy accessibility and sustainability initiatives.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
