Challenges and Solutions for the Integration of Large-Scale Solar Generation Technologies in Brazil

The panel discussed solutions for the Brazilian electricity sector, focusing on the integration of solar technologies on a large scale and the challenge of “constrained off”, which forces cuts in solar plant production. It was proposed to combine solar generation with other technologies such as batteries or hydropower to improve energy management. Brazil has an advantage due to the diversity of its energy sources (hydro and wind), as well as the drop in battery costs. Since 2014, photovoltaic solar energy has exceeded expectations in the country, projecting around 40 GW by the end of this year due to economic alternatives in the face of regulatory limitations. Globally, there is a downward trend in energy technology costs, as evidenced by international auctions using batteries. The Intersolar event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between legislators, regulators and commercial agents in order to solve challenges through the effective combination of the various energy sources available. Eduardo Tobias discussed tax changes impacting renewable projects using a centralized photovoltaic case study. He highlighted technical-economic partnerships supporting developers/investors in making the best decisions in an emerging market. In the debate on global trends in energy storage focused on hybridization, a well-structured regulatory framework in Brazil was emphasized to ensure adequate returns on technological investments. Finally, accessible public policies are crucial during the global energy transition; each project must consider local factors in terms of financial viability.

Despite strong research capabilities and the presence of leading production equipment suppliers, Europe has been struggling to rebuild competitive wafer-to-module manufacturing, while the USA and India have enabled a local renaissance in solar manufacturing. In Europe, even long-established inverter manufacturers have been losing considerable ground. With the EU's Net Zero Industry Act yet to deliver momentum, attention is turning to the upcoming Industry Accelerator Act. This session examines how policy, investment and value-chain strategies can strengthen domestic manufacturing and increase internal value creation.Key topics:Overview of EU and national policy frameworks to support local manufacturingStatus of Europe's solar manufacturing value chainInvestment gaps and competitiveness challenges Strategies for triggering a sustainable solar manufacturing revival
