Exploring the Impact of Digital Technology and AI on Industry Transformation at Conference Session

The session discussed at the conference focuses on how digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), can transform industries by fostering innovation and efficiency. The speaker emphasizes that this technological revolution, often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution, brings both opportunities and challenges such as disruption and uncertainty. Key topics include enhancing design precision, improving organizational effectiveness through new working methods, leveraging robotics in construction, and advancing asset management operations. These advancements aim not only for cost reduction but also for empowering industry talent. Dr. David Moser from Becquerel Institute will provide insights into the current technological landscape while Dr. Etienne Drahi of TotalEnergies will discuss AI's role in reimagining asset management strategies. Dr. Pierre-Jean Alet from CSEM is set to elaborate on data sharing strategies crucial for a robust digital infrastructure before Jan Osenberg of SolarPower Europe addresses cybersecurity concerns vital for protecting critical national infrastructures like power plants.

Digitalization has already revolutionized utility-scale solar, and now AI is emerging as the next game-changer, enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and optimizing performance across a solar power plant's entire lifecycle. From site selection and energy yield prediction to financial modeling during the development, design optimization and automation during construction, and predictive maintenance for O&M, AI and digital tools are transforming how solar power plants are planned, built, and operated. But with solar becoming a critical part of our energy infrastructure, concerns about cyberattacks are growing. This session will provide: Overview of digital, IOT and AI tools across all phases of a solar plant's lifecycle Insight on the opportunities and limitations of today's digital and AI solutions in the solar industry Discussion on cybersecurity risks and mitigation strategies for solar power systems.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
