Solar energy has gained a significant share in the Brazilian energy matrix. According to the recently published “Global Market Outlook” report by SolarPowerEurope, Brazil is to become a major global solar market by 2026. As of April 2022, Brazil had surpassed 15 GW of total installed solar, with more than 5 GW added in 2021 alone. Distributed-generation systems account for 10 GW of installed capacity, and large-scale solar PV power plants for 5 GW. Distributed generation registered record growth in 2021, but that may well be surpassed in 2022. Driven by the growth of renewables, other technologies envision great market potential. Especially Energy Storage can play an essential role. In this webinar the CEO of ABSOLAR, Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia and Markus Vlasits, Managing Director at NewCharge Energy, will provide insights in this promising market.

Both the recording and the presentation are made available to all registrants after the webinar.

Dr. Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR

Dr. Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia is co-founder and CEO of ABSOLAR (Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Energy Association), the national association representing Brazilian solar PV companies and professionals. He is co-founder and a governing board member of the GSC (Global Solar Council), a non-profit body representing regional and national solar associations on international issues.
Rodrigo holds a PhD in Materials Engineering and Technology from PUC-RS (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul), a Master's degree in Renewable Energies from Loughborough University (UK), a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from USP (São Paulo University), and has collaborated with the Fraunhofer Institut für Solare Energiesysteme (Germany) and with ETH Zürich (Switzerland).

Markus Vlasits, Newcharge

Markus Vlasits is the founder of NewCharge and an advisor to ABSOLAR's Energy Storage Workgroup. He organizes energy storage events and conferences, and co-organized a storage conference for Intersolar South America 2021 in partnership with SolarPromotion. He is a current member of ABSOLAR's Board and coordinates ABSOLAR's Energy Storage Workgroup.
Since 2019: He is the founder and managing partner of NewCharge Projects, focusing on PV solar energy generation and storage solutions.
2016-2018: He co-founded and served as Commercial Director of Faro Energy, an investment firm leasing photovoltaic plants.
2007-2012: He was director and then Vice-President of O-Cells SE (Germany), a leading producer of photovoltaic cells and panels.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
