Daimler Truck AG Experts Highlight Depot Charging as Crucial Solution for Electrifying Fleets Amid Infrastructure Challenges

Markus Schiller, a consultant for Daimler Truck AG, addressed the unique challenges and innovative strategies needed for electric truck charging infrastructure. Unlike passenger cars, trucks are purchased based on economic efficiency rather than personal preference, necessitating cost-effective e-mobility solutions. Trucks have larger batteries—up to 600 kWh—and higher energy demands due to their extensive annual mileage of about 120,000 kilometers. Charging these vehicles requires significant power; current standards like CCS offer up to 400 kilowatts continuously with new megawatt standards promising even more capacity. The presentation underscored the need for dedicated truck-charging infrastructure as existing car-focused hardware is inadequate given stringent CO2 regulations pushing rapid electrification in heavy-duty transport sectors. Depot-based charging emerges as a primary method owing to its cost-effectiveness and controlled environment compared to public stations. However, logistical issues such as space constraints at depots pose challenges alongside non-standardized CCS port locations on trucks and risks from cable theft or collisions within tight spaces. Innovative solutions proposed include overhead-mounted chargers reducing collision risk by keeping cables off-ground and anti-theft measures like reinforced cables or dye-spraying mechanisms that deter thieves visually marked upon tampering attempts.

For more than two decades, Norway has been steadily building a marketplace for electric transport. Having started out with inexpensive short-range electric cars and household charging sockets, Norway has now moved to mass-market solutions where fast charging (DC) and grid balancing (AC) plays an ever more vital role. With more than 1,000,000 electric cars and over 10,000 fast chargers in a relatively small market, Norway offers a rare early view of large-scale electrification. Over the past decade, electric cars have seen substantial improvements, which is now making it easier for new markets to advance electrification. At the same time, Norway has to deal with challenges years before other markets do. Yet despite different starting points, we can see that most markets are facing the same core challenges. From grid-smart charging strategies to innovative business models, there are excellent examples of best practices emerging elsewhere in Europe. What will the next thing in electrification be, both in mature and in emerging markets? And what will be possible when the right people and companies come together, sharing knowledge, solving common problems and accelerating the shift to cleaner mobility?
