Thüga Group Leads Hydrogen Transition for German SMEs Amid Rising CO2 Prices and Cost Challenges.

Béatrice, leading Thüga's hydrogen platform, outlines strategies to involve SMEs in Germany’s energy transition. As a key player with over 27,000 employees and extensive distribution networks, Thüga emphasizes the importance of hydrogen for stable future energy amid renewable fluctuations. Projects like H2 Direct demonstrate converting existing infrastructure for hydrogen use effectively while initiatives such as Hydrogen Valley Südbaden support SME transitions towards green hydrogen. Political backing accelerates decentralized production alongside subsidies and imports; however, grid challenges remain crucial—especially ensuring non-electrifiable customers near grids receive solutions during market ramp-up phases given SMEs' economic significance. The transition faces uncertainties regarding political direction and investments; competitive pressures lead companies to adopt cautious approaches rather than decisive actions. Energy suppliers collaborate locally for sustainable regional solutions using tools like High Potentials with Fraunhofer Institute identifying potential demand by postcode across Germany. They engage medium-sized enterprises through commercial chamber formats discussing decarbonization options supported by consulting services tailored via their Total Cost of Ownership model. Despite current high costs (hydrogen at ~200 euros/MWh vs natural gas at ~35 euros/MWh), rising CO2 pricing could shift competitiveness favoring environmentally friendly scenarios despite substantial cost gaps presently benefiting natural gas usage over hydrogen under present conditions influenced by environmental policies and carbon pricing mechanisms.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
