ENTS0-E RDI Committee Highlights Digitalization and AI as Pillars for Future Power System Innovations Amid Clean Energy Transition

The speaker, representing ENTSO-E's Research, Development and Innovation Committee (RDIC) and affiliated with Polish TSO PSE, leads Working Group 5 on Digital and Communication. This group focuses on digitalization in the energy sector through initiatives like the Joint Task Force DCEP to enhance control center operations using innovative tools for future power systems. They are developing AI-based decision support systems to aid dispatchers in system operations. A significant focus is federated digital twins that integrate various physical objects into a comprehensive pan-European model while collaborating with DSOs under DCEP’s scope alongside German technical task forces related to industry vendors. The challenges faced by TSOs include consumer-centric grid solutions and data exchange improvements for control systems operation; thus vendor-agnostic solutions are emphasized due to issues of vendor lock-in hindering adaptation to rapid changes in power dynamics. Standards ensuring interoperability between legacy systems and new modules are crucial for progress towards resilient ecosystems supported by real-time data monitoring technologies like PMUs or synchrophasors. Innovation within RDIC is highlighted as essential, focusing on discovering new technologies aligned with clean energy transition goals while emphasizing collaboration across sectors—power systems, TSOs/DSOs—with European Commission support deemed vital for navigating upcoming transformations effectively.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
