Josef Herrmann, an independent energy consultant, shares insights into a project focused on solar PV systems in Ethiopia. The project began in summer 2022 and lasted one and a half years. It aimed to assess the status of solar installations at social institutions like health centers, schools, and veterinary stations across Ethiopia. Despite substantial efforts by the Ethiopian government and support from Energizing Development (EnDev), only about 2,600 out of an estimated needed 27,000 installations have been completed thus far. Herrmann highlights that many existing systems are not reaching their expected lifespan of 20-25 years; instead, they last between 4 to 11 years due to various factors including poor maintenance and lack of data for effective monitoring. He suggests implementing remote monitoring units as a solution for improving system functionality. This would allow relevant bodies such as the Ministry of Water and Energy or regional bureaus to proactively address issues based on real-time data. However, challenges remain with different donor-provided systems having varied capabilities for data access which complicates centralized tracking efforts.
