Google's Ambitious Carbon-Free Energy Goals Highlighted in EMEA Markets Presentation

Zivile Vens, leader of energy markets development in EMEA for Google, discusses the company's ambitious goals and progress towards achieving 24-7 carbon-free energy across its global operations. Initially, in 2010, Google was one of the first companies to sign a corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) and by 2017 had purchased enough renewable energy to cover its entire portfolio globally. In 2020, they set a new goal to match their consumption with carbon-free energy on an hourly basis by 2030. This aims not only at decarbonizing Google's operations but also accelerating grid decarbonization. By 2022, Google achieved an average of 64% hourly carbon-free energy globally; however, performance varies widely across regions—90% in some data centers versus just 4% in Singapore due to reliance on gas plants. Vens outlines three main strategies: purchasing more diverse types of clean energy beyond traditional PPAs; advancing novel clean technologies like long-duration storage and next-generation geothermal solutions; and advocating for policy changes supporting grid decarbonization worldwide. These initiatives are supported by major institutions recognizing that such efforts can expedite fossil fuel plant retirements and boost commercial efficiency.

24/7 renewable power supply is a fairly new concept that ensures that the amount of green electricity companies require is met every hour of the day. 24/7 renewable power supply leads to increased transparency and trust in energy procurement, and it promotes the installation of new renewable power plants. Some world-leading IT companies have already opted for 24/7 green energy matching.

This session will discuss:

  • The concept of 24/7 renewable energy supply and energy matching
  • 24/7 green power demand trends
  • Real-time renewable 24/7 power production and consumption case studies
  • The potential of 24/7 RES matching (executive panel discussion)

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
