Challenges and Innovations in the Solar Sector Production Chain in Brazil: Technical Perspectives and Optimization Strategies

Nelson Falcão, from ABSOLAR, led a discussion on the challenges facing the solar sector in Brazil, focusing on the production chain and international standards. The photovoltaic sector has generated 1.3 million jobs since 2012, boosted by tax incentives after hydroelectric plants. Decarbonization is seen as a competitive advantage for the country due to the less polluting electricity matrix. A leading globally installed solar technology company faces challenges related to optimal land use by 2050 to achieve ambitious climate targets such as net zero by Bloomberg NEF. Victor, JA Solar's technical manager in Latin America, discussed technological advances in solar modules that directly impact the CAPEX costs of Brazilian projects and the logistical complexities associated with large modern renewable developments. The vital role of the EPCist was highlighted in the success of solar projects through proper planning of the initial phases to avoid significant additional costs later on. The importance of coordination between suppliers during early stages was also emphasized along with careful consideration of local conditions and environmental regulations relevant to the developments of these sustainable projects until October 2023.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
