Off-Grid Innovations and Integration Highlighted at Intersolar and Smarter E Conference

The off-grid conference at Intersolar and Smarter E opens with a warm welcome on a sunny day, perfect for discussing solar energy. Despite some attendees facing travel challenges due to overcrowded trains, the event begins with an intriguing agenda ahead. Professor Peter Adelmann, one of the founders of the conference, shares motivational thoughts about the convergence of on-grid and off-grid systems over his 41 years in photovoltaic (PV) technology. Initially dominated by off-grid solutions before transitioning to on-grid in the late '80s and early '90s, there were predictions that off-grid would become obsolete. However, recent trends show these two sectors integrating more closely. Adelmann shares personal experiences highlighting this integration's practical benefits during grid outages and his work designing hybrid systems in Namibia that cater equally to both non-electrified settlements and grid-connected areas. Philipp Blechinger from Reiner Lemoine Institut introduces himself as today's session moderator after Adelmann's speech. The day's sessions include discussions on decentralized water-energy-food nexuses, digitalization's role in accelerating energy access, innovations in battery systems, and achieving 100% renewable island systems—scheduled conveniently around other events like the European Cup match—to ensure maximum participation without conflicts. The opening presentation is delivered by Bärbel Höhn from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. ***

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
