"Pierre Thomas of LG Illuminates the Role of Heat Pumps in Europe's Energy Transition, Emphasizing Innovation and Collaborative Efforts to Achieve Climate Goals."

Pierre Thomas from LG delivered a comprehensive presentation on the role of heat pumps in Europe's energy transition. He emphasized LG's commitment to innovation and sustainability, highlighting their global vision for smart solutions that positively impact the environment. Pierre stressed the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure successful implementation and integration of new technologies in both existing and new buildings. He discussed how electrification is crucial for reducing dependence on fossil fuels and achieving climate goals. Despite recent market slowdowns, largely due to high electricity costs and economic uncertainties, he remains optimistic about heat pumps as a viable alternative to combustion-based heating systems. Pierre also pointed out that strict building codes, financial incentives, streamlined regulations, and skilled labor are essential components for accelerating this transition. Furthermore, he underscored the need for user-friendly technology that meets customer needs to encourage widespread adoption. Lastly, strategic partnerships were mentioned as vital in promoting comprehensive solutions that drive forward Europe’s sustainable energy agenda efficiently.

Our European energy system is undergoing a major transformation, moving towards decentralization with increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to the grid, such as PV solar, battery storage, and EVs. While DERs provide clear benefits such as limiting costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and helping to empower consumers, there are still challenges to overcome to develop DERs to their full potential. This session will focus on best practices and innovative projects, both from a grid and user perspective (e.g. energy communities) and we will discuss how the regulatory framework can be improved to facilitate the penetration of DERs and active participation from consumers.
