Aggreko Presents Case Study on Hybridizing Off-Grid Mining Sites with Advanced Energy Storage Solutions to Enhance Efficiency and ESG Compliance

Aggreko operates predominantly in the off-grid space, particularly within the mining sector. Their main manufacturing facility is based in Scotland, UK. The company employs various technologies like diesel, gas, HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), and energy storage systems to meet their clients' needs. Energy storage solutions are a focal point of Aggreko's operations for reducing operational costs and improving efficiency. The presentation involves a case study that showcases how Aggreko hybridizes off-grid sites by combining traditional generators with modern energy storage solutions. Clients often request conversion of existing diesel plants to HFO (heavy fuel oil) or other cleaner alternatives while integrating these with battery storage systems to reduce fuel consumption and ensure system reliability. In this specific project, an off-grid mine site replaced its diesel gensets with HFO generators paired with a 12MW energy storage system designed for optimal fuel consumption and continuity of supply. The setup involved advanced control infrastructure coordinating between different power sources to maintain stability and efficiency. Additionally, sophisticated software platforms facilitated functions like voltage response, frequency response, ensuring robust performance tailored to client demands in terms of ESG compliance and operational excellence. This systematic approach ensures effective integration of renewables into traditionally fossil-fuel-heavy setups while meeting industry-specific requirements efficiently.

Energy storage is not an end in itself. The focus is usually on the economic benefits. Previous use cases are often not economically viable. In many cases, CAPEX and OPEX are still too high in relation to the yields. However, we are observing that the market is changing. New framework conditions and/or technical challenges offer opportunities for new types of storage use cases. The transformation of the energy system is giving rise to new use cases. For example, we are already seeing how grid bottlenecks are leading to critical conditions in the electricity grid. In response, transport grid operators are setting up battery storage systems known as grid boosters to test how they can use them to eliminate grid bottlenecks. But there are also many other storage options. This session will give you an insight into new projects and applications for storage systems.

While predictive maintenance has become a well-known concept in battery energy storage, the next step is predictive operation. This approach aims not only to prevent failures, but also to continuously optimize system operation in real time. The goal is to maximize the performance, efficiency and lifetime of the existing hardware in each specific use case. Predictive operation extends beyond the battery cells themselves: Adaptive thermal management, intelligent inverter control and optimal coordination of power electronics all play a crucial role. By anticipating system behavior under different operating scenarios, predictive operation enables asset owners and operators to extract greater value from their storage systems while improving reliability and integration with renewable generation. This session will highlight the latest methods, control strategies and demonstration results that bring predictive operation from research into practice.
