SAMSUNG SDI Introduces No-Thermal Propagation Technology to Enhance EV Battery Safety and Prevent Fire Spread

Christoph Vaalma, a battery development engineer at SAMSUNG SDI's Neurlix office, introduces the no-thermal propagation (no-TP) technology designed to enhance energy storage safety in electric vehicles (EVs). As the global EV market is projected to double by 2030 with an increasing demand for longer driving ranges, batteries are becoming more energy-dense. This raises safety concerns due to potential fire hazards during thermal events. The no-TP technology ensures that any incident within a single cell remains contained and does not spread throughout the entire battery pack. SDI uses prismatic cells with aluminum casings featuring dedicated vents for gas release during incidents. These design elements prevent excessive pressure buildup and facilitate heat dissipation through cooling plates. Additionally, multi-layer insulation materials between cells guide heat away from adjacent components while protecting busbars from arcing or short circuits. The Thermal Propagation Calculator (TPC), SDI’s proprietary tool, predicts thermal event locations using fault tree analysis early in design phases—optimizing material selection and module layouts before validation testing begins. Successful tests on high nickel NCA modules demonstrate effective containment of triggered venting without damaging neighboring cells or compromising overall structural integrity—a testament to this innovative approach backed by international patents across Korea, US, Europe, and China.
