E.ON's Torsten Knop Hosts Session on Flexible Grids and Innovative Grid Management, Highlighting System Operator Perspectives

Torsten Knop, representing E.ON—a major energy group operating DSOs in eight EU member states and Turkey—welcomes participants to a session on flexible grids and innovative grid management. The session focused specifically on how system operators leverage flexibility within their operations. Flexible grids encompass not only using flexibility but also incorporating innovative technology and advanced grid management practices from the perspective of distribution or transmission system operators. The discussion aims to narrow down on understanding how these operators integrate flexibilities into planning, development, and operational processes rather than broad market mechanisms like mobilization or pricing of flexibilities. This aspect has often been underestimated; thus, this session seeks to shine light on it as essential for realizing effective flexible grids. The format includes five brief presentations followed by an open floor for questions. A more extensive panel debate will conclude the event where broader discussions can take place based on participant inquiries.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
