Green Hydrogen Forum Kicks Off at InterSolar Event: Bridging Policy and Practical Implementation for Europe's Climate Targets

The Green Hydrogen Forum, part of the EES and Smarter E events, serves as a bridge between hydrogen initiatives and photovoltaic business. This three-day program delves into policy discussions, real-world projects, internationalization of hydrogen, infrastructure development, derivatives tomorrow, and transitioning hydrogen from concept to economic reality. Each day comprises six sessions featuring company pitches that contribute economically viable elements and pre-selected content aimed at integrating these components into an operational system. Presentations are designed to provide comprehensive insights within 15-20 minute segments. On Friday afternoon, a panel discussion will summarize key points from various presentations. Compared to the initial forum where policies were speculative due to limited resources back then; today's focus has shifted towards new issues arising as efforts materialize—for example through recent auctions by the hydrogen bank despite their imperfection—highlighting industry growth dynamics. Contributions aim at aligning with European Union climate targets by advancing green hydrogen where full electrification isn't feasible while maintaining Europe's competitiveness in this evolving sector.

The hydrogen economy starts to take form. Prompted by the industry, policymakers have responded by establishing the hydrogen bank, securing initial contracts for differences, a start to be continued, highlighting at the same time the urgent need for a new European infrastructure. The European Hydrogen Backbone is an initiative to think European and allow regions to act locally, bringing together the full play. However, change is implmented by people, and this new sector of the economy demands skilled workforce. The hydrogen academy aims at offering transition paths to this new promising sector.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
