Ballard Power Systems Unveils Advanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell Solutions for Emission-Free Data Center Backup Systems

Ballard Power Systems has been providing hydrogen fuel cell systems for critical infrastructure, particularly in Europe’s telecom sector, for over 15 years. They have deployed more than 500 such systems which are self-testing and maintained by Ballard's customer care department. This technology is not new but plays a crucial role in maintaining the reliability and uptime required by backup power systems. In partnership with Vertiv, Ballard offers emission-free backup solutions ideal for data centers and other critical applications. Technically speaking, these fuel cells ramp up quickly—albeit slightly slower than diesel engines—and integrate easily due to their low operating temperatures (below 100°C) and noise levels (82-84 dB). Maintenance intervals are comparable to conventional energy sources, ensuring that the total cost of ownership remains competitive. The presented module stems from marine industry applications where it holds multiple safety approvals from recognized bodies like Norwegian Veritas and Lloyds. It stands out because it doesn't require EX-approved surroundings or constant ventilation making it highly safe. Modular configurations allow scaling up to meet various power demands efficiently without increasing footprint significantly—a major advantage when extended operation beyond typical battery capacities is needed due to geopolitical requirements. In summary, Ballard provides proven hydrogen fuel cell technology capable of replacing traditional diesel engines while offering reliable, scalable, emission-free power solutions readily available through strategic partnerships. The combination of extensive experience and robust service infrastructure ensures seamless integration into existing setups with minimal adjustment needs.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
