Smart Meter Rollout – Status Quo in Germany and What Works Better in Neighbouring European Countries

Free Webinar

Tuesday, March 18, 2025 | 11:00am–12:15pm CEST | Webinar Language: Germany

Germany is lagging behind in the smart meter rollout - no flexibility in the electricity system without digitalisation, no energy transition without flexibility. Germany's special approach to smart metering systems and control boxes is expensive, complicated and slow. European neighbouring countries, on the other hand, have taken other paths and were more successful with them.

Together with experts from the regulatory and practical fields, the Association of Energy Market Innovator shows the status quo in Germany compared to other European countries when it comes to the smart meter rollout and what is already possible with smart metering systems in other European countries.

The recording and the speakers' presentations are available here.

Moderator

Lars Petereit, Head of Digital Energy Transition and Electrification, bne

Lars Petereit is Head of Digital Energy Transition and Electrification at the German Association of the New Energy Economy and is responsible for the areas of digitalisation, flexibility, heat and mobility. He studied political science, economics and renewable energies. Previously, he worked as a Policy & Energy Industry Officer at the German Heat Pump Association and in the European lobby of an energy-intensive company.

Our Guests

Robert Busch, CEO, bne

Robert Busch has been Managing Director of the Bundesverband Neue Energiewirtschaft e.V. (bne) since 2005 and is committed to a liberal, competition-orientated and unbureaucratic energy industry. Born in Cologne, he studied law in Münster, Würzburg and Speyer and began his career in the energy industry in 1999 as legal counsel at ares AG. As a member of the ‘Grid Access Task Force’ at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, he helped to lay the foundations for functioning competition on the energy markets - in 2002 still without the support of a regulatory authority. From 2003 to 2005, he was Managing Director of statt-werk GmbH before taking on his role at the bne.

Tomás Llobet, Managing Director, ESMIG

Tomás Llobet has been Managing Director of ESMIG - The European Smart Metering Association since 2020, representing companies of all sizes, from SMEs to multinationals. Hybrid solar power plants are an emerging area in the energy sector, combining various technologies to provide more efficient and reliable power generation. With a close look on various case studies of hybrid solar power plants we will demonstrate that these systems are increasingly being used as viable solutions to meet growing energy demands, particularly in regions with variable weather conditions. By integrating solar installations with other energy sources, such as wind power or conventional power plants, a continuous power supply can be ensured, even when solar radiation fluctuates.

The continuous improvement of network development plans and flexibility strategies is crucial for addressing the challenges of grid congestion and ensuring effective capacity management. Innovative deployment strategies and business models promote the seamless integration of storage systems, which in turn enhances grid stability and optimizes energy management system costs. At the same time we look in this session at the dynamic landscape of large, grid-connected storage that requires careful consideration of integration timelines to ensure sustainable and future-proof energy utilization.

Hailed as the perfect solution for solar in the building environment for many years, only a very limited number of building integrated systems have been installed for various reasons. With the first cities, states and countries having passed laws for mandatory solar inclusion for new houses and leading global module manufacturers launching first BIPV products, it looks like the time has come for this to change.
