Best Practice Day Energiewende Award

October 22, 2020

The energy transition is a joint project of manufacturers of renewable energy technologies, the end customer and the energy supplier. A recent EUPD research analysis demonstrates that only 28 percent of private households trust conventional energy suppliers to solve the problems of the energy transition sustainably.

Utilities with an outstanding portfolio of products and services related to energy system transformation will be honored in their pioneering role with the Energiewende Award 2020.

As a replacement for the official award ceremony at the innovation platform "The smarter E Europe - Europe's largest energy industry platform" in Munich, a municipal utility Best Practice Day was held in 2020 at which selected winners of the Energiewende Award presented their solutions under the motto "Learning from the best". The digital event consisted of three individual sessions, framed by the keynote speakers Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert (Head of the Department of Energy, Transportation, Environment at DIW Berlin), Dr. Simone Peter (President of the German Renewable Energy Federation) and Katja Diehl (Owner of She Drives Mobility).

With solar power having added more capacity than all other power generation technologies combined in recent years, governments around the world have been increasingly putting solar at the heart of their decarbonization strategies. Next to China, the European Union probably has the most ambitious PV targets. Through its first Solar Strategy, the European Commission has defined targets for solar capacity growth of around 50 percent to 400 GWac (500 GWdc) until 2025, and another 50 percent by 2030.This session will cover:Global Market Outlook for Solar Power 2023-2027 (report launch)The role of solar power in global and European decarbonization policiesPolicies and business strategies for the rapid deployment of extensive solar capacities

An inflationary environment with high product and labor costs as well as rising interest rates have made investments into solar projects less attractive at a time when Europe needs to accelerate deployment in order to meet its climate targets. On top of that, policy makers are creating uncertainty among investors by implementing caps on revenues and rushing to modify an established electricity market design. This session will cover:Overview of the solar project financing landscapeBusiness models and solar investment trendsInsurability and risk assessment in PV projects
