Sustainability: How Can Solar Best Support Nature Conservation and Biodiversity?

The smarter E Podcast Episode 130 | April 6, 2023 | Language: English

Photovoltaics in the field of tension: this topic has preoccupied the industry since the construction of the first large-scale PV power plants on greenfield sites.

In times when project and generation scales are reaching new dimensions, it is more important than ever. How can open-space plants be implemented in harmony with nature and landscape regulations? How can biodiversity be preserved and promoted with the expansion of PV plants And what criteria come into play in environmental assessments that contribute to site selection?

Lina Dubina, Policy Advisor for Sustainability at SolarPower Europe, tells us.

Timeline:

  • 01:58 How can local spatial planning contribute to the mitigation of land use conflicts between solar PV and different types of land, including agriculture?
  • 05:08 Cost-effectiveness: How viable are large-scale PV-plants implementing biodiversity measures?
  • 09:09 What are the benefits for farmers giving their land for mixed-use-PV-plants instead of traditional crop production and farming?
  • 17:59 Sustainable solar plants can contribute to the restoration of degraded land. How will the extra costs for restoration measures be financed within a PV project?

As a solution provider for self-supply with self-generated solar power and manufacturer of electricity storage systems, SENEC, a wholly owned subsidiary of EnBW since 2018, offers its customers flexibility in the use of solar power from their own PV system. With its energy solutions, SENEC offers its customers independence from constantly rising prices on the electricity market.

Together with its specialist partners, the company enables people to have an independent and sustainable energy supply with self-generated solar power. Since the first of October, Aurélie Alemany has been managing director of SENEC. Aurélie Alemany has been working for the EnBW Group since 2011, before that she worked in the chemical industry.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
