Bidirectional Charging - the Future of Smart Energy Supply

Bidirectional charging is a key lever for making the transformation of our energy system a success. It allows us to use electric vehicles not just as a means of transport, but also as flexible, mobile electricity storage systems. Excess energy from renewable sources – especially solar and wind power – can be efficiently stored until it is needed, and then be fed back into residential buildings, company infrastructures or the public grid. The technology opens up new perspectives for intelligent sector coupling by balancing out fluctuations between generation and consumption. This helps to reduce peak loads and eases the burden on the grid, minimizing the need for costly grid expansion. What’s more, bidirectional charging can generate income for private households, companies, fleet operators and utilities. Several pilot projects have already demonstrated the technology’s vast potential. Intelligent load control, dynamic electricity tariffs and targeted grid services can lead to considerable savings – and provide new sources of income. These pioneering projects also highlight what is needed to enable the widespread adoption of bidirectional charging: Harmonized regulatory framework conditions, technical standards and high-performance energy management systems are the basis on which bidirectional charging can become an integral part of a renewable 24/7 energy supply.
