Kempower's Bruno Moedim Discusses DC EV Charging Hubs and Smart Charging for Energy Solutions

Bruno Moedim introduces himself as a segment owner for Energy Solutions at Kempower and discusses the company's role in providing DC charging solutions suitable for various electric vehicles, including cars, buses, boats, and machines. The focus of his talk is on optimizing DC EV charging hubs to capture opportunities in the balancing market. He outlines three main topics: identifying the problem that DC charging hubs aim to solve; providing an overview of Kempower's ecosystem designed for capacity markets in Scandinavia; and explaining how V1G smart chargers support grid stability. Moedim highlights how grid operators maintain a stable frequency (50 Hz) using mechanisms such as Sempreof Кон with Kempower Charger Solomon technology. By offering flexible fleet depot charging plans through V1G chargers, similar services traditionally provided by hydro power plants can be achieved. This flexibility aids energy cost reduction and renewable integration into grids while creating revenue streams for charge station owners. He further elaborates on evolving their projects from simple hardware setups to integrated systems incorporating battery storage and solar PVs managed via ChargeEye—Kempower’s energy management platform connecting assets to reserve markets. A practical example from Finnish bus depots illustrates optimized scheduling based on electricity price signals that reduce costs significantly while also enabling participation in frequency regulation markets. In summary, Bruno Moedim provides insights into leveraging smart charging infrastructure to enhance grid services, optimize costs, integrate renewables more effectively into the energy system, and generate new business opportunities within electric fleet management.

Our European energy system is undergoing a major transformation, moving towards decentralization with increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to the grid, such as PV solar, battery storage, and EVs. While DERs provide clear benefits such as limiting costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and helping to empower consumers, there are still challenges to overcome to develop DERs to their full potential. This session will focus on best practices and innovative projects, both from a grid and user perspective (e.g. energy communities) and we will discuss how the regulatory framework can be improved to facilitate the penetration of DERs and active participation from consumers.
