Fraunhofer ISE Details System Integration Efforts in Energy Transition Towards Zero Emissions with Multi-Domain Simulations and Flexibility Strategies

At Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, we focus on integrating various energy technologies as part of the energy transition. Our work includes photovoltaic (PV) and solar projects but has expanded to cover system integration incorporating PV, hydrogen, thermal systems, grids, and electronics. The goal is to manage the flexibility between different sectors such as electricity grids and local heat grids for a comprehensive defossilization strategy. This effort aligns with broader European initiatives like FIT455 and the Green Deal aimed at reducing emissions through emission trading systems. Our approach involves multi-domain simulation tools like REMOTE that evaluate entire energy systems covering sources, storages, flexibilities, and consumption sectors. These simulations help in planning from today till 2045 by emphasizing strong electrification processes across various sectors including agriculture, transport buildings, industry. Achievements include reaching over 50% renewables in Germany’s electricity grid. Flexibility remains crucial due to fluctuations in renewable sources like wind and solar energy; hence backup solutions involving gas or hydrogen power plants are essential for stabilizing future supply-demand dynamics within our integrated system framework.

Hybrid solar power plants are an emerging area in the energy sector, combining various technologies to provide more efficient and reliable power generation. With a close look on various case studies of hybrid solar power plants we will demonstrate that these systems are increasingly being used as viable solutions to meet growing energy demands, particularly in regions with variable weather conditions. By integrating solar installations with other energy sources, such as wind power or conventional power plants, a continuous power supply can be ensured, even when solar radiation fluctuates.
