Germany Launches Inertia Market to Enhance Grid Stability with SMA's Innovative Solutions

The presentation provides an overview of the German market for inertia and SMA's role in power conversion across various energy sectors. Inertia is crucial to maintaining frequency stability within power grids, especially during system splits that can cause significant imbalances. Historical events from 2006 and 2021 illustrate these challenges, where large discrepancies in gigawatt distribution led to partial load shedding but avoided full blackouts due to effective defense plans involving sufficient inertia. Germany anticipates a need for approximately 1,200 gigawatt seconds of additional inertia by 2037. Large-scale batteries with grid-forming control are proposed as solutions to emulate conventional rotating mass generation and provide short-term peak power capability. A new regulatory framework has been introduced by Bundesnetzagentur for Germany’s emerging inertia market, offering long-term contracts until 2031 based on a fixed price mechanism yet-to-be-determined. The UK serves as an example with its operational battery providing similar services since early this year. SMA offers products like StabilityBase capable of delivering up to 18 gigawatt seconds per installed capacity unit, positioning itself strategically within this evolving market landscape.

Energy storage is usually not an end in itself. The technical and financial benefits are always the main concern. However, it is often difficult to prove the profitability of use cases. Acquisition or operating costs are often still too high in relation to returns. But the market is changing, and new framework conditions and regulations are creating opportunities for new use cases. The most attended session of the ees Europe Conference 2024 already gave attendees an overview. In 2025, we will take this format to the next level. In this session, you will learn more about the latest challenges and how to overcome them to create financially profitable use cases.

While predictive maintenance has become a well-known concept in battery energy storage, the next step is predictive operation. This approach aims not only to prevent failures, but also to continuously optimize system operation in real time. The goal is to maximize the performance, efficiency and lifetime of the existing hardware in each specific use case. Predictive operation extends beyond the battery cells themselves: Adaptive thermal management, intelligent inverter control and optimal coordination of power electronics all play a crucial role. By anticipating system behavior under different operating scenarios, predictive operation enables asset owners and operators to extract greater value from their storage systems while improving reliability and integration with renewable generation. This session will highlight the latest methods, control strategies and demonstration results that bring predictive operation from research into practice.
