Electric Fleets and V2G: Reducing Costs Through Smart Charging and Flexibility

The speaker adds the perspective of electric fleets to the V2G discussion. While vehicle-to-grid is currently mostly focused on residential customers, electric fleets are also a major part of transport electrification and emissions reduction. Fleet operators are especially interesting because they make decisions mainly based on total cost of ownership. Unlike private customers, who may also be motivated by sustainability or technology interest, fleet operators switch to electric vehicles when the economics work. If EVs reach cost parity with combustion vehicles, large fleet operators can quickly shift major parts of their purchasing to electric. The speaker gives examples of electric bus projects at Oslo and Schiphol airports. Through smart charging, grid connection needs were reduced significantly, and charging was shifted to cheaper hours, creating around €150,000 in annual savings. This improves the business case and encourages further investment in electric fleets. From a grid perspective, the technology to aggregate and optimize EV flexibility already exists. Fleets can be pooled into virtual power plants and used for trading or grid services. The main missing element, especially in Germany, is a proper market-based incentive. The speaker argues that dynamic grid tariffs would be the best solution. They would allow grid operators to set higher or lower fees depending on grid conditions, encouraging charging when it helps the grid and discouraging it when the grid is stressed. This would align customer savings with grid benefits and make fleet flexibility much more useful.
