Greg Austin, VP Renewable Energies EMEA at juwi, discusses the Sukari Project—Egypt's large-scale off-grid hybrid power plant integrating renewable energy and battery storage for improved reliability at the Sukari gold mine

Greg Austin, VP Renewable Energies EMEA at juwi, presented on the Sukari project located at the Sukari gold mine in Egypt. Launched in 2022, this facility was initially recognized as the world's largest off-grid hybrid power plant for mining operations. Greg Austin elaborated that UV has been a pioneer in renewable energy since 1996 and identified hybrid sectors as crucial for industrial clean power by 2015. Thus far, UV has deployed nearly seven gigawatts of renewables worldwide. The Sukari project aims to transition from reliance on diesel and HFO generators to integrating renewable energy sources with battery storage systems (BES). This integration ensures reliability despite being off-grid—a critical factor given potential operational disruptions like unexpected machine shutdowns affecting production and safety. The BES acts not just as an energy source but more significantly as a "power battery," providing instantaneous backup during load changes or cloud events—thereby maintaining stability and optimizing performance while achieving substantial fuel savings.

Large installations are developing rapidly, and innovative applications in this area are on the rise: Hybrid power plants combine PV with wind or batteries or both, while floating PV uses water surfaces as power plant sites. This session will present projects such as Europe's largest floating PV installation and Sukari, the world's largest off-grid hybrid power plant. The latest trends in project development, EPC, O&M and Asset Management will also be discussed.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
