Kraken Technologies and Octopus Energy Transform the Energy Sector with Decentralized Solutions and Innovative EV Charging.

The text presentation the shift from centralized to decentralized energy systems, necessitating innovative technologies and adaptability. Historically reliant on wood and biomass until coal, nuclear power, and gas dominated through centralized generation in the 1800s, recent decades have seen a move towards decentralization with solar wind technology and hydrogen innovations. This transition requires real-time grid balancing for diverse needs. Kraken Technologies Ltd., addressing challenges like fragmented legacy systems, is developing an integrated platform offering tools such as "Client" for customer relations management or "Field" for operational flexibility via smart meters. Their focus includes supporting multi-asset platforms globally while streamlining contract processes; they partner successfully with Octopus Energy within this evolving landscape. Octopus's Intelligent Octopus Go tariff in the UK exemplifies these solutions by providing lower EV charging rates during off-peak hours using Kraken’s technology—resulting in increased customer satisfaction across over 260,000 electric vehicles involved within three years. Expanding operations worldwide since around 2016 into countries including France and Germany alongside partners like Tesco has led to significant achievements in battery aggregation projects growing capacity significantly—from under 1 MW to 1.2 GW—and optimizing global energy trading fields today reaching millions!

Our European energy system is undergoing a major transformation, moving towards decentralization with increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to the grid, such as PV solar, battery storage, and EVs. While DERs provide clear benefits such as limiting costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and helping to empower consumers, there are still challenges to overcome to develop DERs to their full potential. This session will focus on best practices and innovative projects, both from a grid and user perspective (e.g. energy communities) and we will discuss how the regulatory framework can be improved to facilitate the penetration of DERs and active participation from consumers.
